Unlike most video programs, Movie Edit Pro puts its video preview panel at top left, with the content and effect source panel to its right. It's an attractive, clean-looking interface. Magix Movie Edit Pro's interface presents flat-style button icons for all the effect types, with gray borders and a near-black editing area. One option that's a good idea to check is Create proxy files, since that can speed up common editing actions. There's no vertical format, which I'm starting to see in a lot of the video-editing apps. On first running the program, you see the Create Project window, in which you can specify resolution, file location, and other basic settings. I had no trouble loading HEVC clips Adobe Premiere Elements, by contrast, couldn't get HEVC right in my testing, despite claiming compatibility with the newish format. Thankfully, you no longer need to activate codecs for 4K and other standard formats to add clips to your timeline or storyboard. You'll also have to do more online activations before using certain features, such as working with MPEG files.

You have to register the software with your contact information before you can start using it. The stub in turn downloads the 800MB video editing program and the music software.

To install the software, you first download a small stub installation app, and you get a choice of also installing Music Maker.
Movie Edit Pro requires Windows 7 through 10, a 2.4GHz processor or better, 4GB RAM, graphics hardware with DirectX 11 support, and a minimum of 2GB hard drive space.

Finally, the Movie Edit Touch app for Windows 10 and Android expands the product's reach. For the real pros, Magix offers Video Pro ($399), which offers professional-level capabilities such as three- and four-point editing, three-way color correction, broadcast-quality sound editing, and extended format support.įree 30-day trial versions are available for all versions, but you're limited to three minutes of output per project. To all that, Premium adds professional plug-in effects from HitFilm, Red Giant, MotionStudios, and ProDAD, all of which are industry-standard video software makers. The Plus edition increases the track limit to 200 from Standard's 32 and adds multicam and 360-degree editing, more effects, and more audio tools. But it lacks stereo 3D recording, screen capture, secondary color correction, beat-based editing, video proxy, 360-degree support, and several premium effects.
The standard edition is surprisingly capable, with 64-bit operation, support for 4K content, and lots of effects. Those are official list prices, but they're often discounted online. Magix's video editing software is available at three levels: the standard Movie Edit Pro ($69.99 list), Plus ($99.99), and Premium ($129.99, the version reviewed here). (Only Plus and Premium levels.) Extend the base program's titling and effect capabilities with over 200 titles and 250 effect templates. You can use any of these with the aforementioned title animations. Casual fonts that look like handwriting and minimalist modern fonts have been added.
The program now has 30 fonts for your titles. These capture the viewer's attention with fly-ins and zooms and more. Most consumer video software offers preset title animations. These prefab modules give your home videos a professionally produced look-at least at the start and finish. The redesigned stock material lets you show where you went with map animations. Let's face it, many of our home projects are vacation-related. The program already offered decent stabilization, but the feature has been updated. In most video projects, you'll end up with blank areas in your timeline Movie Edit Pro can now remove all the gaps with a single click. Since Magix lets you include more than one movie in a project, this menu choice offers options for adding, removing, or merging the included movies. See your edits reflected as you make them in the timeline with the new Split & Trim tools. It also promises smoother playback of complex projects. Magix even named the new underlying software the Infusion Engine, claiming it can speed some actions up by a factor of 8.6.
